PROJECT 2

Thesis:   Mark Bittman criticizes in “The Domino Theory, Redux,” that the obesity rate in America is not only killing off the youth and adults of this great nation, but as well as costing us millions of dollars in medical bills and increasing the defficet. Through this article, it hopes to reveal to America that by increasing the tax rate on soda, the obesity rate will decrease, our enconomy will rise and as well as save lives.
Obesity is defined as when a person has a BMI that has progressed passed healthy standards and threatens the life of the person who is over weight. The obesity epidemic has been a major component in the political community because it has been a curse to the US due to the fact that the world views us as overweight slobs. This may seem as though a small problem because no one will attack us due to our weight but in a larger view, the most powerful nation should be showing the world powerful people and saying the obese part of our nation is powerful is much like telling the world that we'll bomb you if you take away our chocolate.

This article was proclaiming that the soda companies are slowly killing our population and refuse to pay extra in taxes that would go to programs that would teach young elementary students proper diets that would help contribute to better health in their bright futures. Mark quotes in his article that with $80,000, that money could be spent to teach every 3rd grader in Richmond and state wide how to swim. Mark also quotes that "$800,000 we can put a nutrition-gardening-cooking instructor in each of our 10 elementary schools” in Richmond. Mark is outraged much like most of the American public that although the soda companies make millions of dollars in profit, they refuse upon request to do anything to help save the lives of their customers and future americans. I believe that if the soda companies want to still gain profit and not have to pay such high tax rates, that they should pay for health programs to be installed in schools around the nation. By paying schools for a health program, they can consider the money they spent the be donations and get a tax break so that they can still manufacture and gain a high profit off their products and as well as start a trend in the soda community so that more companies will try this new way to make money. If just one company tried this then it will not only help our youth survive longer in life but as well as save the American public from being referred to as a obese nation.
